Ajit is Chair of Infectious Diseases and Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Respiratory Infections Health Protection Research Unit at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
He leads multidisciplinary public health research to protect the public from major respiratory infections including flu, TB and emerging threats such as COVID-19. He translates his research into practical solutions to improve diagnosis, screening and prevention of infectious diseases. As a Governor of The Science Museum he encourages public understanding of and engagement with science. He is committed to reversing ever-widening health inequalities by tackling the social determinants of health through innovative, community-based approaches, such as those pioneered by The Bromley by Bow Centre, Tower Hamlets, where he chairs the Trustee Board.
Ajit is a long-standing resident of Regent’s Park. He was appointed a Commissioner in 2018 for a 3 year term and reappointed for a 4 year term in 2021.
